Things are okay with me these days
Got a good job, got a good office
Got a [new] wife, got a new life
And the family is fine....
-- Billy Joel
Wow. Can't believe I am still here. Or that the site is still here. I wonder if I am the oldest dog around nowadays. Surely everyone else has moved over to the hot searchable book-deal-generating blogs. And here I am, blogging, dating back to well before "blogging" had a name.
I still trade emails with B from time to time. They are in the tone of the Billy Joel song, though. We both lived through all that hell and all the country's hell. We both made it through the recession. We both have two lovely little girls. We both gave up conquering the world and decided to just tend a little apple cart in one tiny corner of it.
B was gone from school by September 11. I mean, by the September 11. I remember a lot of tears, confusion, and eerily silent skies. I remember rushing in to the web development office and posting a bunch of web updates to the campus, spurred by the need to do something, anything, on that day.
A few days later, I met Mercury. He was throwing a New York Firefighters' benefit party. I went. I gave a couple bucks. I met the man and fell head over heels the moment I shook his hand.
Two kids and more than a decade later, I am still sad for my country. And I can still hard-code a link in HTML.
